Encountering The Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains is a town within Grey County, where the Beaver River flows into Nottawasaga Bay. The town was formed in 2001, when the town of Thornbury was amalgamated with the township of Collingwood. Thornbury is the primary population centre in the Blue Mountains and connects the surrounding territories to encompass the communities of Christie Beach, Clarksburg, Craigleith, Heathcote, Lora Bay, Ravenna, Slabtown Town and Victoria Corners, just to name a few. Thornbury has a variety of independently owned and operated businesses welcoming all walks of life. Main street offers many boutiques, galleries, specialty food stores and cafes, drawing visitors during all seasons. The waterfront is well known for the marina and pier, where many visitors and residents alike plunge into the clear blue waters for a refreshing dip or sailing the Bay taking in the scenic views.

The Economy
Named for “Blue Mountain” and hence the economy of the town is centred around tourism, particularly the Blue Mountain ski resort and the private Georgian Peaks, Osler, Craigleith and Apline Ski clubs. The Blue Mountain Village area at the base of the hill contains condominiums, hotels, conference centres, restaurants, and many other shops and services. With the European ski resort vibe, the village represents a similar feel to the Whistler-Blackcomb resort in Alberta. From downhill skiing, mountain biking, hiking trails, a private beach, miniature golf and now with the addition of the “Alpine Coater” the Blue Mountains offer year-round adventure and entertainment, with ample opportunity for great profit.
